AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

It is a type of automatic fire fighting and is of three types based on the industry, type of hazard and area to be protected. Primarily, water or water based chemicals or foams are used by these systems.

  1. WATER BASED AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM
  2. WATER SPRAY SYSTEM
  3. FOAM SYSTEM

(A) WATER BASED AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM
This is typically a system in which temperature sensitive fire sprinkler heads are installed through a network of sprinkler pipes and flexible sprinkler hoses which are then connected to a source of stored water or a water tank.  The heat due to fire activates the sprinkler heads in the fire safety system which spray pressurized water (water pressurized as per the system design through the hardware like the pumps, pressure switches, pressure gauges, butterfly valves, non return valves, ball valves, electrical operated panels) on the fire area.

(B) WATER SPRAY SYSTEM
It is a type of system is used in places where fire has chance of rapidly spreading out of control such as LPG bullets, combustible fuels, Transformers etc.

In this system, temperature sensing element is installed in rings to detect the fire. This detector ring is placed next to the most likely spots where the temperature is about to exceed or fire is about to take place. Also the, entire transformer is surrounded by multiple sprays, at multiple levels. A spray is nothing, but a sprinkler without the temperature sensing, bulb. 

When the fire does take place, the detector ring detects this; and gives the signal to the deluge valve and all the sprinklers surrounding the burning area to start all immediately. The entire burning area or product on fire is sprayed with pressurized water to put off the fire.
The two variants of water spray system include: High Velocity Water spray system (HVWS) – It is generally suitable for oil based risks having high flash points. The velocity of water spraying on the burning object is very important for fire extinguishing in this system.   Medium Velocity Water Spray Systems (MVWS):
It is generally used in oil based risks having low flash points. Here again the velocity of water is very important as the high velocity in this case might spread the fire rather than extinguishing it.

(C) FOAM SPRAY SYSTEM

Fire Protection Foam, also locally know as Foam Fire Fighting System; is a system of firefighting, where water is not used. In certain cases, water can actually cause the spread of fire; example, electrical fire or petroleum based fires. Here, automated fire protection is critical and has to be provided, yet water should not to be used. This challenge is met by the Fire Protection Foam.
Foam 
Foam Sprinkler is triggered on detection of fire thus causing the flow of water into the bladder tank. The concentrated foam chemical goes into the bladder tank passing through the proportioner. The proportioner maintains the desired level of foam in the bladder tank. The foam diluted by water, passes through the pipes under pressure, onto the fire through the sprinkler. The foam covers the fire giving blanketing effect and removes the Oxygen from the fire triangle and extinguishes the fire.
